Basotho Heritage Blankets - Traditional Wearing Instructions
The Basotho Heritage Blankets are worn in all situations by the Sotho people, both ceremonial and for everyday protection against the elements. It is said that all one needs to survive is a camping blanket to rest on and a sharp knife to survive in Lesotho. It also very common to say "Kobo ke bophelo" - Blanket Is Life.
These galleries show the most common way for the blanket to be worn by men, and the two most common ways for them to be worn by women. The blanket is traditionally fastened at the neck with a "blanket pin" which actually originated as a kilt pin. A genuine blanket pin is included with each Mountain Kingdom Basotho Heritage Blanket, made in Africa by Aranda.
